That's some scary stuff at that site; the concept of using old tires as a compost bin, for instance, is just so wrong in so many ways. For starters, the composting process generates heat and acidity that would leach the maximum amount of contaminants out of those tires. AND it looks like a pretty lousy bin design as well (way too small; no airflow...) It doesn't give me a lot of confidence in the other ideas.
Don't forget that these tires are always somebody's problem. They cost money to dispose of--so, hey! Let's stick them in people's gardens instead!
Just because something CAN be done technically doesn't mean it SHOULD be done ethically.
Again, these things--old tires--are essentially classified as toxic waste. I think they should be disposed of properly by qualified individuals, not accepted for free and used to potentially contaminate soil and people.

Bill,
I don't have the book, but if you go to www.tirecrafting.com you will see a
man who has gone around Salt lake promoting the same thing. He has actually
developed a very easy way of flipping the tires inside out. His books and
videos are for sale from the web page. He has come and shown us these tires
and how he uses them. If you want to call him, his name is Paul and his
number is on the web page.

Regarding tires in the garden, at the Salt Lake City ACGA conference
2001 a presentation was given on cutting the sides of tires and creating
long strips of tire lumber to create raised beds for gardens. This was
presented by someone from Nebraska or Iowa... presentation was
supplemented by info that showed that no toxics leached out from the
tires (if I remember correctly) there was also a book that was handled
out on all of this. I have the book somewhere and will try to get a
link to their site or an email address.. in the meantime anyone form
Salt Lake City have that info handy?
