FYI: This e-mail just went out over the Parks 2001 listserve. Parks 2001 is
a NYC Parks and Open Space greening group interested in garnering more of
the city's budget for Parks. Unlike most mainstream parks groups, Parks 2001
has community gardeners ( the Clinton Community Garden and others) on it's
planning committee, and is pro-community garden.

The More Gardens! coalition asked me to let everyone know that they need
help tomorrow getting petitions signed (this is also a great opportunity to
get Parks 2001 petitions signed as well). By July 8th they need 30,000
signitures, so anyone that wants to help them over the next few days should
contact 212-533-8019 (they are offering paid petitioning positions)
The petition and instructions can be downloaded from the web site
www.voteforgardens.org. Great locations and events are also listed.
More information about the More Gardens! coalition follows:
The More Gardens! Coalition, along with a dedicated group of gardeners and
activists are gathering signatures for a referendum campaign to transfer the
administrative control of Green Thumb gardens back to the Department of
Parks
and Recreation. Please support our efforts by informing your network and
begin gathering signatures today. For phase one, by July 8, we need to
collect signatures from 30,000 New York City residents who were validly
registered to vote as of last November, for phase two, we will need another
15,000 valid signatures to place this referendum on the November 6, 2001,
ballot.
Currently, over 400 of our precious New York City Community Gardens are
threatened by bulldozers!
In 1998, Mayor Giuliani transferred the administration of the community
gardens from the Green Thumb program, a parks-administered office, to the
Department of Housing Preservation and Development. Dozens of our oldest
treasured green oases were destroyed as a direct result. Plans to develop
over 400 of the community gardens are underway. Only the State Attorney
General's temporary restraining order keeps the bulldozers at bay.
This referendum drive provides us with a very visible and direct way to
impact electoral politics here in New York at a very crucial juncture for
the
fate of the gardens. It will be a first step in a concerted effort to force
the city and elected officials to permanently protect these vital community
assets.
