RE: Children's gardens

Katy,

Please let me and the American Community Garden ("ACGA") list serve know how this project plays out for you. With the input of the hospital's care givers and the kids themselves ( the most important) we'll all be able to learn from your experience,...be able to incorporate your newly-gained wisdom in our neighborhood efforts.

Also, joining the American Community Gardening Association may be something you will want to do.

Empircal studies ( just like the ones on the Alka Seltzer commercials) have shown that ACGA membership gives it's members garden design, organizational and karmic benefits that become apparent after you've received your first journal. Here's the ACGA site for membership information:

Best wishes,
Adam Honigman

Katy,

1) For starters, read through the American Community Garden website for general tips on community gardens and garden people

organization. http://www.communitygarden.org , especially the Starting a Community Garden Page with a special children's plot

2) This link on children gardening from the Virgina Tech "Human Issues in Horticulture" ( http://www.hort.vt.edu/human/human.html ) should be helpful to you. The links on it's horticultural therapy page and links are pretty useful

http://www.hort.vt.edu/human/Children'sG.html . It is well worth reading through all of the links on the Virginia Tech page for ideas and contacts.

3) This University of Arizona listserve archive on children's gardening may be of use to you:

4) Some Amazon book links to explore:

Backyards and Butterflies : Ways to Include Children With Disabilities in Outdoor Activities
by Doreen Greenstein, Naomi Miner (Contributor), Emilie Kudela, Suzanne Bloom (Contributor)

Accessible Gardening for People With Physical Disabilities : A Guide to Methods, Tools, & Plants
by Janeen R. Adil

The Enabling Garden : A Guide to Lifelong Gardening
by Gene Rothert, Laurie Noffs (Illustrator)

Healing Gardens : Therapeutic Benefits and Design Recommendations (Wiley Series in Healthcare and Senior Living Design) by Clare Cooper Marcus (Editor), Marni Barnes (Editor)

5) Good luck. Be sure to get to know the day-to-day caregivers at the hospital and the kids. Try to get a gut feel about what they would really use and feel comfortable with in the real worls.

Best wishes,
Adam Honigman

Hi everyone, I have been invited to help design a children's garden at the Connecticut Children's
Medical Center and was wondering if any of you have excellent web pages, books, articles etc.
about childrens/healing gardens.  Thank You for any help, Katie
