Rhubarb is the first fresh fruit available to Northern Ohio farmers.
It is a heavy feeder. Mother always removed the seed stalks~ not
allowing the plant to use energy to produce them (we didn't want more
than a few plants). The plant also can be split to propagate it.
Some farmers forced extra early growth with a cold frame placed over it.
The most healthy rhubarb grows tall and looks rather exotic with it's
large leaves on tall stalks.
The leaves are poisonous (oxalic acid).
We ate rhubarb when the first stalks grew about 8 inches tall (before
the leaves enlarged) until the end of strawberry season about the end of
June. Rhubarb will stretch a few strawberries and add
interest.............that was at the season end for both fruits. Mother
pulled it, rather than cutting it. It does take a while to get that
healthy. Keep putting the manure around the plant (winter is the best
time to do this). I never eat anything that has had manure put around
it for several months. Therefore, I'm apt to place manure at the end of
the harvest to help the plant produce for next year.
Rhubarb is probably not possible to grow near Phoenix..... all the
literature says so, I've seen serveral people try and fail, and I have
