Position Summary:

This is an extended temporary position through December 2001. This position will develop and implement a program to provide education and training on the new USDA 2000 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The program will train school administrators to use school/community gardens as a tool for teaching children and their families the new guidelines. The program targets adults (teachers, administrators, parents, and volunteers) who are involved in the education of children. The grant will target eight school districts in Maricopa County which will be selected for participation based on an RFP. This position will be responsible for managing the grant as well as seeking additional funding for future programs. The position will also provide an on-site educational program at each school district and at two county-wide mini camps.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide leadership for Arizona Department of Education Grant on Child Nutrition with major responsibility for the development of methods and procedures within established guidelines.

Review and evaluate effectiveness of teaching methods and work activities.

Train and supervise subordinates and volunteers in subject matter and methodology utilizing specialized knowledge and skills.

Organize, promote, coordinate and conduct specific programs with adults or youth.

Develop training programs and materials.

Prepare assignments, curriculum, classroom activities or other materials.

Create support resources for the program, including a website and quarterly newsletter.

Direct data gathering activities, including design evaluation and analysis.

Assist faculty members in the development of programs and program proposals as required.

Answer inquiries and provide information relating to the completion of forms, meetings, materials and record keeping.

Provide instruction in technical subject matter as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND one year of instructional or subject work experience; OR, Five years of progressively responsible instructional or subject work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in program and project development including all phases from start-up to implementation.

Skill and experience in developing an educational program.

Event or meeting planning experience in creating training mini camps.

Experience and relevant education credentials or training in nutrition, fitness and/or horticulture.

Experience in effective grant management.

Experience in effective fund development, grant writing, and developing program support.

Experience in recruiting and working with volunteers.

Team building and working skills to build partnerships to create and maintain grant projects.

Experience with public relations and bringing media attention to promote programs.

Effective communication skills to design and create a quarterly newsletter including proofreading, and article composition skills.

Working knowledge of IBM computer and related software programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Experience and knowledge in developing websites.
