I think I have figured out the answer -  this must be a generational thing. 
I can imagine no "culture" in which the appropriate reply to a correction of
list protocol, either general or individual, real or imagined, would be a
thinly veiled "f-u."   
I didn't think this person's initial request for info was particularly
disrespectful, a bit abrupt and self-absorbed, but not actually rude.  You
spotted
the true thing a mile off, I must admit.
