Roger,
The first thing I would do is to open the phone book ( or go online) to get
the address of your local State agriculture dept. extension office. I'd call
them for information on soil testing. This is essential to know what lurks
in your dirt ( toxic waste, heavy metals, too much of one nutrient or
another.) Once you have this snapshot, and if there are no problems with
toxic waste or excessive heavy metals, you can begin working the soil,
adding compost, manure and other soil amendments as needed. There is a
wealth of information on organic gardening on the web, and of course, you
can contact this listserve for more information once you're further along.
But first, have your soil tested!
Happy gardening,
Adam Honigman
