getting started

I am a university student living in a small town in Louisiana. Although
we are a small community we have serious racial and crime problems. A
community garden is just an idea and desire in my heart right now, one
that I know my community desperately needs.
Any info on the basics of getting started or how others how others have
realized their desires would be most helpful. My goal is to break
ground this coming Spring.
