Our garden rules are less compellingly worded than the Clinton Street ones
but I paste them below for your perusal. Spanish translation included.
#7 is my catch-all - a handy clause. We also have people sign a
registration form with a statement saying they agree with the rules.
I should also note that while I sometimes can be persuaded that rules are
made to be broken, it is much easier to back down from a hard line than to
escalate from a soft one.

Rules of the Frankie Machine Community Garden -2000
1. Plots are reserved for one season. Former gardeners will have priority
to reserve their plot for the following year.
2. A contribution is requested for use of a garden plot. Reccommended
donation: $15-$20 for a large plot, $10 for a small plot. No refunds will
be given to gardeners who resign. Funds will be used for garden supplies,
information on finances is available on request.
3. Plots must be planted by May __. Those that are not will be reassigned
or planted with a cover crop to keep down weeds.
4. Only organic means of pest control should be used. Remove infested or
diseased plants so that the problem will not spread to other plots.
5. Gardeners must keep plots weeded and pick produce when ripe. Do not
remove weeds or produce from other's plots.
6. All organic waste must be discarded in the compost bins, not in the
garbage cart. Each gardener must assist in maintaining (turning and
watering) the compost pile.
7. No nuisances, unattended pets or unlawful activities in the garden.
8. The garden gate has a lock, which should be used. Be careful not to
loose this lock - for example, don't leave it hooked open on the fence when
the gate is open.
9. Do not bring wood or other materials to store at the garden. They will
be removed. The garden must be kept clean. Everyone must do their part to
pick up trash whenever we see it.. This doesn't mean just working on our
individual plots - we must make sure that the sidewalks and parkways around
the garden are kept free of litter and other debris. This is very important
- if we don't keep the area clean, people will complain about the garden.
It's important that we use the land as efficiently as possible.
10. Please help keep the water barrels filled. NOTE: The water equipment
must be guarded carefully. If it is lost, we will not be able to get
replacements. Remember, it is much better for plants and the environment to
water plants directly by hand, instead of spraying them with the hose.
11. Activities in the Frankie Machine Garden are undertaken at your own
risk.
GARDENERS WILL OBSERVE THESE RULES, AND REPORT ANY PROBLEMS TO:
