Created in May of 2000 by Iowa Governor Thomas J. Vilsack through Executive
Order #16, the Iowa Food Policy's purpose is to address issues concerning
Iowa's food system. The Council consists of twenty-one citizen members from
different food-related sectors.  These areas include farming organizations,
professional associations, representatives from industry, and ex-officio
members and special advisors from state government. The Council is able to
transcend strictly agricultural policy, state government departments, and
all facets of the food system from seed to the dinner table because of its
wide scope and varied membership, . This "food system" approach brings
attention to issues such as availability for at-risk citizens, value-added
agriculture through direct marketing, and sustainability.

Good Morning All,

The community of Grand Rapids Michigan has taken the initiative to develop a
Food Systems Coalition.  The organization is still in its formative stages
and was wondering if anyone has had experience structuring a
multi-disciplinary / professional organization of this sort before.  Are
there any models that could be suggested as a guide (No need for us to
reinvent the wheel here)?  Your help is much appreciated!
