The University of California, Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology
and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) is accepting applications
for a Postgraduate Researcher. The Postgraduate researcher will
help to develop and conduct social-science research related to
sustainable food and agriculture in the Central Coast region of
California.

The successful candidate should be able to develop plans and
coordinate activities for the execution of research tasks,
consult appropriate literature to inform methods and procedures,
and prepare written reports of activities and results; will
develop and maintain statistical databases, conduct literature
searches, and prepare literature reviews and annotated
bibliographies; will also be responsible for the administrative
coordination of the multiple projects of the social-science
research team.

Minimum qualifications
Doctorate or Master's degree in sociology, geography, social
anthropology, environmental studies, or related field.
Experience in designing, planning, and coordinating social-
science research projects. Experience in social-science research
methods; data collation and analysis skills and experience,
including statistical data analysis.  Excellent English-language
written and oral communication skills. Experience using word
processing, spreadsheet, and database computer programs.
Experience writing grant proposals.  Ability to work effectively
as part of a research team.

Preferred qualifications
Experience making professional presentations, including to
academic audiences. Experience supervising student workers.
Demonstrated understanding of sustainable agriculture and
equitable food systems. Spanish language fluency. Experience
collaborating with partner organizations. Experience using
bibliographic databases.

Position available
October 21, 2002.  Appointment is through September 30, 2004,
with possibility of extension (contingent on performance and
availability of funds). Salary:  USD 35,304 -  USD 43,908
(commensurate with qualifications and experience; position is
eligible for full UC benefits).
