Jeneva,
While I don't have a copy of the first National Geographic picture of a community garden, it dates back to the eighties - and if I recall correctly, was of a NYC community garden.
Best wishes,

Hi, Adam.
I'm not sure which previous photo you refer to, but
there is an excellent article on gardening in the Vol.
181, No.5, May 1992 issue of NG, pages 52-81, by
William S. Ellis. There is also a great article on
community gardening and its benefits by Margo Pfeiff
in Canadian Geographic, Jan/Feb 2001, pages 64-72. I
used both as references (among several) for an article
on the benefits of urban greening, which I wrote last
November as part of a funding proposal for my
community greening project. It is indeed wonderful to
see recognition of community gardening in such
prestigious publications. I'll have to get my hands
on a copy of the latest NG.

Jeneva Storme
