Community Garden Statistics

Hi,

I am currently a product design graduate student at Stanford University 
working on some design projects centered around community/traveling 
gardeners. I am having a bit of trouble finding some statistics to 
validate the impact that designs for community gardeners would have for 
the general population.  

The information I am looking for is: 1) the total number of community 
gardens in North America and 2) the estimated number of community 
GARDENERS in North America (or if that number isn't know, the number of 
plots and approx. how any people work each plot).  

Any help, information or leads would be greatly appreciated!!
