gardens with a (broader) purpose...?

hi there. i'm a journalist and a wannabe community gardener. i pitched the idea of a piece on community gardening to a magazine with which i work, suggesting an examination of why belonging to a cg is such a fulfilling experience for so many. they responded that they'd rather cover a few particular gardens, preferably ones with prescribed additional purposes beyond gardening (raising money for charity, helping children in the community, etc.). in other words, they don't want to do something simply on community gardening (though i think that's compelling enough...) but are interested in hearing about gardens with particular community-related programs or connections. so...i'm asking members of all such gardens to let me know what you're up to. hopefully this will lead to a great article...or several.

meanwhile--i'm based in nyc and interested in finding a cg with available space. i know that's hard to come by, but if any local gardens are currently open to applications, i'd love hearing about it. thanks very much. pam
