I have just done some searching on Solanopteris brunei, interesting plant!
Solanopteris brunei
a.. Query NCU-3e
b.. Common Name: Potato Fern
c.. Family: Polypodiaceae Bercht. & J. Presl.
a.. Country of Origin: western tropical South America
b.. Habitat: epiphytic fern
a.. Description: Rhizome tubers are complex rhizomatous sacs infested with
Azteca and other ants. Ants supposedly mine sugar-laden tissues in the rhizome
tubers to hollow them out for occupation, and bring in debris later exploited
by roots entering sacs.
a.. Culture: Grow in hanging basket in fern mix. Allow rhizomes to run into
new basket for propagation. Does not propagate well if rhizomes detached
before established in new basket.
Has anyone tried growing it, and can it live without the ants?
