Peter,
While I do not agree with the philosophy of protectionism of governmental control, what you say is true philosophically, but not practically. If something is salable, commercialism takes over and instead of propagating things, collecting takes over. It is easier, cheaper and after all, nature put it there, right? If a plant can be used in commercial hybridization, there are those that do not want the other guy to have it. Then all of this gets into the politics commercialism. Add to that the politics of governments which has very little to do with the plants per se, and you end up with a big mess. You and I love the plants, but most often, the plants are not the issue in the plan................ Wish I knew an answer that was really about saving the plants and getting them out there so they do continue. You have those who say collect and save. You have those who say leave them alone and let them survive in the wild. The latter would be great if there was not massive destruction of the wild with absolutely no concern for what is contained in the wild that is being destroyed.
Why do I say this......... bit of ambiguity? Because I have been there done that and I have seen the destruction, and I have seen the commercial collection for sale of plants from orchids to aroids to ferns............... I have seen the subterfuge of making it look like there has been protective propagation when in reality, what is on the market is simply collected plants. What I am saying is that if it were simply the little plant, one could act responsibly. It is not simply about the plant. It is about money and greed and political control and governmental interplay. It is not so easy to achieve protection when the forest is being destroyed, governments play games, those who have not been in the field tell us how to do it with no practical experience, and you get the picture............ on and on......

Absolutely brilliant !!! There would be no such thing as extinction if those who love the plants were allowed to propagate them , instead of all the red tape that officialdom enjoy imposing.
