It is definitely not D. cordifolia, which has ovate sterile fronds that are undivided, and hastate to tripartite fertile fronds (per Christensen's Pteridophyta of Madagascar). I agree it is most likely D. pilosa as described in Burrows' with sterile fronds having rounded overlapping lobes and fertile fronds that are tall, bi-tripinnate, and densely hirsute-scaly beneath. Christensen refers to D. pilosa as a "very distinct species" belonging in Cheilanthes.

Apparently a nursery has finished quite a batch of this fern, for last Friday
I found them for the first time in our garden centre. It was labeled
"Doryopteris cordatha" by the garden centre and "Doriopteris cordata" by the
nursery. The name could be a mistake, such as happened with Pellaea cordifolia
(syn. P. cordata). Doryopteris cordifolia (Baker) Diels, Die Nat|rlichen
Pflanzenfamilien 1(4): 270; 1899 (no description nor image) is described from
Madagascar. I do not have any Madagascar literature at hand here, so I cannot
say anything on this identity. However, the nursery says it is a fern from
Mauritius (http://www.smitkwekerijen.nl/popup.php?id=104).

As far as I see, the genus name is correct.

As to the species name, although I don't have a description of D. cordifolia
and neither do I know the origin of D. "cordata", I would venture to point out
the striking similarity to D. pilosa (Poir.)Kuhn var. gemmifera as described
in Burrows (South African Ferns and fern allies). The distribution of D.
pilosa comprises La Riunion, Mauritius, Madagascar and South Africa.

Hello all

This week I had a query from Scandinavia, as follows;

Last week I buy a fern from a Garden Center. An Antenna Fern (Doryopteris
cordata) (They spell it Doriopteris c.). At www.vivaria.nl I saw it.


So I visited vivaria.nl, and sure enough, there it is in their on-line
catalogue.

So I asked them what is the REAL name for this fern, and the name they
use does not appear in the fern literature. ( I did a lot of checking, so even
if I
am wrong, the name is difficult to find).

Which says to me that he is not prepared to take the matter further. The
images at vivaria.nl give a slight impression of the fern.
