I  wouldn't worry about 40 degrees unless you have something  really
extraordinary.  My lingua and hastata just took an inch of  snow,
followed by a soaking rain and a hard freeze overnight at 22  degrees,
and they're still fine.  Certainly didn't expect that!   Wish I could say
the same for my Blechnum serrulatum.  :-(
