Hi Holly
The University of Leiden Botanic Gardens (BG) in the Netherlands
has a big living collection of tropical ferns from South East Asia. They have
many species of Pyrrosia, Drynaria, Aglaomorpha, Lecanopteris etc. I was there
recently and very impressed by the size and quality of their living
collection.
Obviously in the UK there is Kew, Glasgow BG, Edinburgh BG and
Oxford BG. (There used to be a fabulous collection of tropical ferns at
Calderstones Park in Liverpool but the glass houses were demolished by the
city council in the 80s when the garden staff refused to go out on
strike during the winter months for fear of letting the tropical plants
freeze. It was a scandal at the time... don't get me started on the subject!)
Hope this helps
Valdy

Subject: [ferns] fern collection
statistics/diversity
Dear Fernnet,
The University of California Botanical
Garden at Berkeley has a diverse fern collection (500 accessions, 340 taxa,
84% of wild origin with data, 59% with a herbarium voucher).
We would like to
know how this compares to other fern collections, especially within the United
States but also worldwide.
Please share your perception of what are
significant fern collections in public institutions.
Thanks in advance,
Holly Forbes
