	It sounds like all I need now is a home ploidy test kit for ferns, a PhD
assistant, and I'm ready to start breeding ferns.  

	Thanks to everyone for answering my initial question.  The answers have in
turn created new questions that here-to-fore, I didn't realize were
questions to which I needed answers.  I am far more confused, but only by
the new answers which generated even more new questions.  Regardless, I
have reached a much higher level of not understanding what I'm attempting
to do.
