Re: Sterilizing spore & agar as a growth medium.

For all but the most experimental reasons in a lab, there is no reason to
sterilise spores. It is more important to clean spores so that they are free
of dross (ie sporangial debris) This could introduce other spores of fungi
etc.
 
If you are simply growing ferns from spores for horticultural purposes, it is
better to sow on a peat-based compost. It can be difficult to establish ferns
in compost that have been germintated on agar.

Do any of you sterilize your spore prior to sowing it, and if so could you
tell me how please?

I have read about various methods, including alcohol.

Also, do any of you use agar as an initial growth medium?

It seems to be used fairly widely, but is there any real advantage in doing
so.
