Back in May, Mike Taylor asked about:
> Dryopteris filipaleata, J.P. Roux
This was first described last year in Bothalia 34: 27-30 (2004). Dryopteris
filipaleata is known only from tropical montane forests of Tanzania and Kenya,
growing alongside Cyathea manniana. It is 2-pinnate-pinnatifid to 3-pinnate at
the base, to over a meter in height.
It is one of very few Dryopteris without an indusium. Otherwise it is most
closely related to D. pentheri, a widely distributed African wood fern,
differing in lacking glands or two-celled hairs, and possessing long, thread-
like scales on the lamina, this last character giving rise to the specific
name.
J.P. Roux provides a very detailed description and drawings. He is also, I can
attest, a superb guide for a fern foray.
