Hello Larry,
My first guess at looking at your photo was that this is a Dryopteris
and was most reminiscient of Dryopteris dilatata or one in that group. Your
photot didin't quite provide the small detials that help a grower sort
sporlings apart. Even at a young age the three Dryopteris that Tom Stuart
feels it might be are quite distinct by the time there are fronds at least
an 1" long. I find that Dryopteris dilatata and its cultivars,
carthusiana, camplyoptera and expansa are all serious self-sowers in my
greenhouses in other potted ferns and on the edges without ground cover.I
also find sporlings that elude classification and once one has perused
Henry's Potter's "Field Guide to the Hybrid Ferns of the North-east" the
possibilities are mind boggling with so many species jostling together in
such close confines.
