"Where the Red Fern Grows"

Hello all,

Here's an example of one of many fern-related queries I get. But this one 
could take quite some research for me to solve, whereas those of you who 
live in the NE USA or nearby may know what the correct answer is, or if 
there is no correct answer.  Comments - solutions to problem will be much 
appreciated.

Here's the short exchange of e-mails;
