Re: Weather/botanical names

When it comes to most plants, Kitty. With tropical fruits, botanical names are absolutely necessary--since any given fruit can have as many as 20 different common names depending on country or dialect. And, of course, the too common common name is always a mystifier--we call the native Asimina triloba "pawpaw"; Australians call Carica papaya "pawpaw." Big difference in those two fruits, not even in the same family.

Jim, since I don't grow food, I tend to forget about that. Yes, it would be
pretty silly to use botanical names for most food crops. But when it comes
to ornamentals, botanical names really help.

And plants where the botanical name has become irrelevant with the
abundance of variety names, as with tomatoes.

As far as I'm concerned, common names are too confusing. The only
plants I address by their common names are "weeds"!

Good grief! What an ignorant bunch. I don't blame Debbie for
quitting. I'd have done the same thing. Our MG group is also
terrible about using botanical names when discussing plants because
they think they are too confusing, but they don't get as carried away
as Debbie's ex-group.
