When it comes to most plants, Kitty. With tropical fruits, botanical names are absolutely necessary--since any given fruit can have as many as 20 different common names depending on country or dialect. And, of course, the too common common name is always a mystifier--we call the native Asimina triloba "pawpaw"; Australians call Carica papaya "pawpaw." Big difference in those two fruits, not even in the same family.
