I've just rooted a pad of Opuntia compressa (one actually native to IL). It will go into the garden in a few days. While not "the cactus from hell" I treat it with respect. Did you know that cacti are native to all the "lower 48" states except Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont? And the family is only found in the Western Hemisphere? Of course they have been introduced elsewhere...to the regret of places like Australia, I think.

As I recall, it bloomed a couple of times--flowers are not terribly attractive, either. Yellow, as I recall. Don't know if I took pictures [that was BD--before digital] but I'll look.
