I have a couple of pads in pots that I'm going to try to get planted today, Cathy. Not sure what the species is; I'll have to look it up and see what I bought last year. Interesting that you should mention its distribution. There is one growing at the National Academy of Sciences building in Washington, DC, that is from the top of the Andes in Peru. It grows flat to the ground, like a ground cover, not upright as we usually see them.

I've just rooted a pad of Opuntia compressa (one actually native to IL). It will go into the garden in a few days. While not "the cactus from hell" I treat it with respect. Did you know that cacti are native to all the "lower 48" states except Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont? And the family is only found in the Western Hemisphere? Of course they have been introduced elsewhere...to the regret of places like Australia, I think.

We've had it for quite awhile. You probably haven't heard about it because it's ugly as well as dangerous. Up till now, it has lived in a pot--mostly because we couldn't figure out what to do with it--that has recently come to be in the way. So we had to do something with it.
As I recall, it bloomed a couple of times--flowers are not terribly attractive, either. Yellow, as I recall. Don't know if I took pictures [that was BD--before digital] but I'll look.

Somehow, I just don't think this is the last we will be hearing about the cactus from hell.....and I don't mean viewing the lovely flowers :) Donna--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT
