fountain question

Ok- this question is for anyone who has a fountain...
We are thinking of putting in a fountain in the back near a patio we are building. My question is how do you keep the pump from getting clogged up with gunk (dust, stuff from the trees etc) that falls into the fountain base? I have images of having to dismantle the fountain to clean out the pump way too often to keep is running.

Any fountain building advise??
