Re: Pines in japanese gardens

Cyndi, I have no expertise in this but suspect pruning is equally important
to training. In a quick Google search I found this web page
http://www.sabot.org/gguide/japan.htm
which refers to Japanese maples but at least answers some of the question re
larger trees (i.e., not bonsai). I think one's eye and understanding of the
plant's natural growth pattern are of paramount importance. I attended a
seminar once by a master Japanese-American bonsai maker and what he could
see in a "raw" plant and accomplish artistically (over many years) was way
beyond my ability or understanding -- and incredibly beautiful.
