What was it tangled in? I agree with Donna, that it would be dangerous for an untrained "rescuer" to approach a bird of that size and beak. It is a shame that there was no one among the vets in the area who couldn't attempt a rescue. We have a raptor rehab center here in Quincy, and they have always been willing to pitch in on other birds - last year they took in a loon (they still can't figure how it got to the central Mississippi valley...)

They are also very mean and dangerous, especially when hurt(as with any animal). I wouldn't go near it unless I could tranquilize it... which is illegal. The DNR folks could have done that...but it sounds like they didn't get there in time. I am surprized they didn't take it with them tho or tag it anyways... cause who ever does take it out of the tree and although totally free of any wrong doing.... could get in trouble if caught with the carcus. But are you saying it would be a federal offense to have even helped it when it was still possible? A locla column today wrote about a lttle boy whosawa great blue heron hanging upside down in a cottonwood tree, tryingtoget untangled. They called animal control, the fire department, theDNR,all of which said they couldn't do anything. After 6 hrs the bird was bloody from the high winds and its efforts to get loose so DNR authorized shooting it - if anyone happened to have a gun, which finally someonefound.Unfortunately, the carcass is still hanging there. They saidsomeonefinally called a tree service the next day, hoping they can get itdown.I'm not sure what should be done, but don't you think the second largest county in Indiana should have some plan in placeforsuch problems?
