Hi, Libby.

I found a piece of chick wire [aka poultry netting] and sort of put a fence around the trunk. It's high enough--2 feet--to protect the frond boot, so I think that will work. I intend to leave it in place until that frond is history, maybe a year.

By that time the culprit will have been hit by a car [it lives across the street] or something.

Perhaps you could put an oriental rug next to the palm?

Or, this would look odd, but I know a couple people who have used
plastic wrap indoors because the cats don't like it and won't claw it.
Could you, for a short period, wrap the trunk including the boot of the
frond? I know it would be a moisture trap but maybe if it were only for
a couple weeks...

There are two different formulations for mothballs. One is NAPHTHLALENE
and the other is PARADICHLOROBENZENE. Both are potentially very toxic.
The naphthalene type is more toxic. Both vaporize to produce fumes wich
can cause toxic effects on the central nervous system (possible
seizures) and the liver. Naphthalene can also cause blood disorders (eg
hemolytic anemia).


Mothballs should not be used around birds. Exposures to high
concentrations of vapours of mothballs by humans, especially young
children, can also result in toxicity.

Re moth balls, I have mostly used them to discourage cat peeing in
unacceptable places. Seems to work well. I do have some concerns about the
chemicals in relation to soil and have only left them there briefly till cat
got another habit.
