Fargesia nitida and a few other Fargesias are hardy to zone 5. These are Mountain Bamboo types that clump rather than run.

Sue there are many different varieties of bamboo. Some are "running" bamboo
that spreads like crabgrass and others are "clumping" varieties that will
spread slowly. I've heard that some of the running varieties need to be
contained by concrete barriers. Your zone should be fine for at least some
bamboo. Check out this site to see what might work best for you:

I imagine something will be just right. I have only grown a running variety
indoors, so I haven't had much personal experience with outdoor growth and
habits, other than my mother-in-laws neighbor who planted a running type and
it ended up taking up a good portion of my MIL's back yard (zone 5.)

I've always wanted to grow Bamboo but am aware it will not work in this
climate and is highly invasive, a real pain when planted. I would like to
try some in a pot. How deep do I need the pot for the roots? Do I need to
start with seedlings or can I find seeds? Will it work in shade or must it
have full sun? How about watering? Thanks much.
