It is Salvia "black and blue" (and did you know salvia spelled incorrectly
is "saliva"- you can imagine what google found for me when I searched
that!)- and it is a stunning salvia. I have to replant mine though- never
seems to last more than 2 years for me.

Other things my hummers/bflys/bees love include: Chaste tree, scabiosa,
pinapple sage, other salvias (I have way too many to remember then all),
buckwheat, lantana, lavender, and some california native that has reddish
tubular flowers that hang down (and amazingly the little hummers manage to
hover underneath with their beaks straight up into them to eat). Oh, and
cilantro that has bolted and flowering is one of the best things I've ever
found to attact the little tiny native bees (which then use my
"leaf-cutter" bee box to lay their eggs and start the cycle all over again
the next summer). I'm sure there are more things, just can't think of
them all right now.

Hi Pam
You have a Turk's Cap planted? Is that the same Turk's Cap I'm thinking
of that is tropical? I didn't know it could take a frost. Glad to know
you have salvias planted around. I really want a butterfly, hummingbird
sanctuary. What's a black salvia?
Thanks Pam

I have daylilies around the rose's feet and irises & rudbeckia
scattered throughout the bed. Have a black and blue salvia and a Turk's
cap at one end of the big rose bed and they seem quite compatible. Got a
few clumps of garlic in there too, but that's to keep most of the bad
buggies off my roses.

Ok, I have two rose questions but I'll ask them in seperate emails. I
want to put in a rose garden. Currently I have a Redbud (which had the
most magnificent display of flowers this spring) as the center piece.
The area is about 20x20 more or less. It's not square. Anyway, what kind
of plants go well with roses...companion plants and any ideas how to
arrange?
Thanks, I can't wait to here the suggestions.
