In my opinion you give up nothing. A lot of the "new" roses were developed with no thought to frageance, so they may have little, if any. There are beautiful scented roses as well. I am addicted to walking out and being hit by a wave of fragrance, be it rose or daphne or lilac or ... you get the idea. I have a few unscented roses, but many more that are. I am definitely a fan of own-root roses. If they freeze to the ground, you get back the same rose from the roots. They tend to be smaller initially, but within a few years are going strong. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Franzman" <dfranzma@pacbell.net>

Hi Judy I do like fragrant. What do you give up by getting fragrant roses typically? Thank you for the offer. Let me see how this growing season plays out and then if its ok with you I'll ask again later in the summer. The canes areshorter. I have Golden Showers on its own roots, so far not hard to keep toa manageable size. If you want fragrant, Gertrude Jekyl is a gangly thornybeauty that needs to be tied up to something, blooms all along the stems. If you want a start, I can send a stem later this summer. Mr Lincoln gets to beabout 8 feet for me, too.----- Original Message ----- From: "David Franzman" <dfranzma@pacbell.net>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Sunday, April 06, 2008 7:20 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] climbing roseHi Donna Glad to hear your weather is finally breaking. It's been a long one for you folks. I did think of Clematis in fact. I killed one that I had in a pot several years back or BATOTT (Before A Touch of the Tropics) Lol! Anyway, so you plant three together? I will give that some thought. Are all climbing roses huge? I don't want to constantly fight the thing. Every time I get a climber it tries to take over the world...or at least more space than I allowed. Have you thought of clematis? I plant three together, and early, mid and late season, so it is blooming most of my season, which is allot shorter than yours. Donna David Franzman <dfranzma@pacbell.net> wrote: Hey again Ok, second rose question. I'm looking for a climbing rose (possibly) to climb up a trellis along my house. I don't want a huge one as the trellis is about 8' tall and 4' wide. Also looking for a rebloomer. South wall of my house. Any suggestions? If you have a better suggestion than a rose would love to hear it.
