Plant a Row for the Hungry
Communities Harvesting Hope
The economy has taken a toll on most of us. Food pantries are
reporting record numbers of food requests, and supply is low. You can help.
Plant a Row for the Hungry. If you have a garden, please consider
Planting a Row for the Hungry. "Plant a Row" was started by the Garden
Writer's Association in 1995 to encourage gardeners to plant a little extra
for food pantries and soup kitchens that serve the homeless and hungry.
The need is great. According to the survey "Hunger in America
2006", conducted by America's Second Harvest, 24-27 million Americans rely on
emergency food services every year. Food banks are stretched especially thin
in this time of economic crisis. Monetary and canned food donations are down
and requests for assistance are growing. PAR is a community-based
organization, and food grown in the community feeds those in the community.
Have a small garden? It doesn't have to be a lot at one time. Have a
few extra tomatoes? An extra squash, cabbage, some beans? Extra from your
fruit trees and berry bushes? Take them where they'll be put to good use.
Contact your local food banks and churches to learn where to bring them.
How else can you help? You can help by spreading the word.
You can help by encouraging your friends and neighbors to plant. If
they don't know how, show them!
You can help by collecting from those that don't drive, or aren't
available during drop-off times. You can help by locating sources and
"gleaning" leftover produce
You can help by putting PAR information in your subdivision
newsletters and websites and at your churches and social clubs. Perhaps your
church or a local school or subdivision has a bit of extra ground for a garden
plot. That's great, too. Many groups like to weigh and tally donations and try
to beat their own record (or that of neighboring groups).
If you'd like more information, see the Plant a Row website. If you'd
like a marker or two, send a long SASE and I'll get them in the mail.
