Re: Feels like summer

It's been a great year for veggies and fruit trees so far here. But HOT in the past couple days- in the 90's. Supposed to cool off to 88 tomorrow.

Doesn't seem we have spring or fall anymore. Last weekend was wonderful 70's
but of course, I had to work Sat and it rained all day Sunday. Today it is
snowing. Supposed to be back in the 70's for the weekend, but I will be out
of town....
I can see this isn't a good year for gardening.... Donna

It was a very short while ago I was complaining about being cold.
Someone turned up the thermostat, because now we're getting temps in the
90s. Ah spring, can't make up its mind what to do.
Saturday we rode with a group we just joined, a longish ride through
some hills to a local restaurant. Never been there before, very horsey
area obviously since the place has several hitching rails outside. Nice
weather. Fewer wildflowers than I expected to see, it is already getting
too dry for them. Ceanothus is in bloom though, I wish it would grow in
my garden.
Sunday was even hotter. I pulled the row cover off the peas and the bed
of lettuce and spinach. Peas are looking pretty good. Lettuce and
spinach, what's there looks good but the germination is spotty. I always
wonder why I get the kinds of germination I do. I'll have one row where
half of it doesn't germinate, other rows where every seed comes up, or
spots maybe 12 inches long where there's nothing. I wonder if it's
insects, ants maybe.
I dithered about planting beans right up until the point where I opened
the seed cabinet and discovered I have no bean seeds. Okay no beans.
I'll fill out the beds with more tomato plants, I was only going to put
in five but ten will be better. Husband is experimenting with his
tomato plants too, he's got a number of largish buckets and put drain
holes in them and buried them. I think his idea is to fill them with
dirt and that moisture-retaining crystal stuff, plant the tomatoes in
them, and they will take less water than conventional planting. I think
it won't work like he thinks but I'll watch with interest.
I'll have roses in bloom within a week. Iris are starting, daffodils are
gone, lilacs are almost gone, weeds are rampant. I need time to pull
weeds!
