Re: red oak bug

Kitty, I did some more searching online today and I think the bug is a
locust leafminer (Odontata dorsalis). Details and a picture are at
http://www.forestpests.org/southern/Insects/loclfmnr.htm. I am relieved to
read that "Outbreaks of the locust leafminer are generally more spectacular
than destructive." However I sprayed the tree with insecticidal soap this
evening, just to see if I can convince some of them to leave. It's a young
tree (planted this spring) and it might be stressed by such a heavy
infestation--they are gnawing the leaves pretty good. I have a young sugar
maple and a young copper beech close by, and there are no bugs on them. The
black locusts in the nearby woods are showing a lot of leafminer damage, so
it makes sense that they are in the vicinity.
