Re: sweet autumn clematis

That huckster on the Weather Channel--P. Allen Smith--was touting this plant last weekend. And I have to admit, the one he showed on an arbor was quite attractive. He also said he cuts it back all the time.

I had a SAC in front of my house that never reseeded. I also had one in the

female, but both made seeds. I guess the one in front was sterile. Beats
me. Verona

My big problem are all
the reseeders. I do cut back the seed heads in late fall
also to help reduce the problem.

I only have a few reseeders each year, I think it has to with the position
in my garden. I couldn't possible deadhead this vine, most blooms are out
of reach. Even if I could reach them.....that would seem to be 1000s of
seedheads to cut off. Maybe I'm exagerating, but geez there's a lot.

I have two SAC each on a trellis of their own which is 6' x 7' and it is
not
enough. Because it blooms on new wood, I cut it back as needed and of
course,
I cut within a few inches of the ground early spring. My big problem
are
all
the reseeders. I do cut back the seed heads in late fall also to help
reduce
the problem.
