Re: Starting a nursery/David!

Shouldn't be too much of a surprise that there are tropical-zone deserts.

True, thet aren't tropical; they are desert. I tend to lump tender
plants together. My book says Polianthes tuberosa is hardy in zones
9-11, some others say 8-10; Mobot says 7-10. It's not hardy in Z5, so
it's tender to me. Tender sometimes means tropical, sub-tropical,
desert, not fully hardy, to me.

Well, I've got a really nice Curcuma growing in a pot. I already moved
it up a size, wonder if I'll have to do it again. My tuberose is also in
a pot - just beginning to open now. Other tropicals I do plant in the
ground, like the Cordyline, Bulbine, Osteospurmum; then dig them up in
fall to bring in. I'm really not fond of containers.

Bananas and gingers and oh my! Of course when I said we could plant them
I
wasn't really thinking of zone 4 folks. I think I would be happy with
zone
7 in Zem's country. But we'll see.

Hey Holli, I told you on the phone about Musa basjoo. Hardy to 10 or
20
below freezing. There seems to be a difference of opinion on that.
The
fruit is not edible and the bananas are about the size of my ring
finger.
But the pod and subsequent hanging fruit is very cool. Ok, that's
just a
start.

Did you get those hibs repotted?
