They look an awful lot like the birch caterpillars (can recall if they were cutworms or websorms or what they were) that we ID'd at my sister house in Boston. There are a ton of varieties of these nasties. I hope yours are not one of these. Do you have a tree of some kind nearby with a bunch of leave devoured?
