Re Theresa, Donna, and Cathy's comments....none of it sounds good. And yes they are near a birch tree which in the past has had "black rain" though I didn't notice that this year. I've looked at lots of photos and have found lots similar but none just like it.
I think I should collect them and get rifd of them.
Any reason anyone thinks I shouldn't?

They look an awful lot like the birch caterpillars (can recall if they were cutworms or websorms or what they were) that we ID'd at my sister house in Boston. There are a ton of varieties of these nasties. I hope yours are not one of these. Do you have a tree of some kind nearby with a bunch of leave devoured?
