Know what you mean. After 35+ years on the east coast, I never quite got used to those lawns--"Everyman's Versailles," we called them.

Even in San Diego almost everything green you see gets some kind of irrigation. They did not get any rain last winter either, and although there's irrigation rain helps a lot to keep everything looking decent through the summer. Every time I go back east I spend a lot of time gawping out the car windows at the green. "Look at all that GRASS! Somebody has to mow all that!" My first trip to California. I loved the weather. My first day there I went to the zoo and confess I was much more enamored of the plant life than the animal, although that was interesting too. Spent a lot of time eating and shopping and walking around downtown. This was a work trip most of which was spent at the Marine Corps RecruitDepot. Jim, they had a blooming Hong Kong orchid tree in the Drill Instructors court yard. Loved it. That was the first time I've gotten to see one actually blooming in real life. Loved all the palms and the Jacaranda (I think) trees were blooming too. I'd love to try one of those here but I'm afraid it wouldn't survive the winter. But, I'm glad to be home. I have to admit that although their weather was MUCH nicer, the plant life wasn't nearly as lush as I thought it would be. I guess because it's so much more rainy here? Everything at home looks like it's grown a foot in the week I was gone.
