I had the same ideas as Donna. The only question is why are they in flower pots and not devouring your trees?

Could be in one of the stages of a gypsy moth as it changes... http://www.forestpests.org/gypsymth/ but with all of them so close, how about the Hyphantria cunea The fall webworm, a caterpillar that feeds on over 100 species of deciduous trees, is active after the gypsy moth caterpillarpupates, becoming most obvious in August and September. The fall webworm spins silk nests in host trees and is characterized by silky hairs and pale green or yellow color with a black stripe on its back and yellow stripes on its sides.or Malacosoma disstria Forest tent catepillar The forest tent caterpillar, which is closely related to and resembles the eastern tent caterpillar, is characterized by fine hairs, blue markings on its side and back and white "keyhole" markings on its back. It feeds on sweetgum, oak, birch, aspen, maple, elm and basswood, among others. Despite its name, the forest tent caterpillar does not produce a silk nest. Just some thoughts. ----- Original Message ---- From: Kitty <kmrsy@comcast.net> To: gardenchat@hort.net Sent: Saturday, August 4, 2007 2:59:37 PM Subject: [CHAT] ID help Can anyone identify these caterpillars. There's about 2 dozen of them in pots of Bergenia and Uvularia, a few on the ground next to pots too. http://flickr.com/photos/kmrsy/1009091127/ Kitty neIN, Zone 5 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT
