Some of the white Magnolias here bloom again in July. Not as dramatic as on the leafless trees in early spring, but very pretty. Judy B z 6 Idaho 68F night & high 80s to low 90s daytime. Had a spit of rain yesterday. Dry. Restricted to watering Mon & Fri nights. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Zemuly Sanders" <zemuly@comcast.net>

My Magnolia soulangiana bloomed in the fall either last year or the year before when we had a long, hot dry summer. My brother, who is a horticulturist, told me it was caused by stress. The tree recovered and has been fine ever since.. I'll just have to see what happens this year. Mine is on the back of a bed I have been watering so I figure it will be all right. Good luck. This weather is a mess!zem zone 7 West TN----- Original Message ----- From: "Kitty" <kmrsy@comcast.net>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Saturday, August 04, 2007 9:46 AM Subject: [CHAT] drought and MagnoliaIt has been 90s all week and will be all next week, possible rain tomorrow, but there just hasn't been enough. We had a very difficult dry spell early on from which I think I am now seeing the results on my once beautiful Leonard Messel Magnolia. (15 yrs old, about 15-20 ft tall)A month ago I thought I had a dying limb and cut it off, which actually enhanced its structure so I didn't worry. But now it has dropped nearly all its leaves. However, it is developing next year's flower buds. It is in full sun and had been underplanted with thick ivy which I removed in March.Do you suppose this is just a reaction to lack of water? and that it will bounce back next year? Any thoughts?Kitty neIN, Zone 5 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT
