I do appreciate everyone's sympathy, support and suggestions.
Raised beds are one idea we've had, if we could find someone
to build them, but that's a really big project and at my age may
not be worth the effort.
As for the blue ribbons, Kitty, I had 13 out of my 29 entries in our
flower show last month - and I was in competition with myself in
several of the classes. Of course I enjoy winning them, but they
are no novelty.

Art. Set up as in working together. If you're going to garden successfully
in your locale, I think you need more than fencing. Art would build you
some primo raised beds, probably lined at the sides AND bottom with hardware
cloth. Next comes real fencing and at the top would be angled pieces that
keep deer out.
Considering what you have to contend with, you can't mess around w half
measures. Make a plan. Build it and they will come. And they'll be very
surprised
