Donna,

That may be the difference between those of us who handle a hundred dormant
plants per year vs. those that deal with a couple of hundred of each of a
hundred species.

As for bark, unless it's a mature specimen, bark is pretty much meaningless
to me, unless it has prominent lenticels or something. Maybe I'm missing
something, but juvenile bark is mostly smooth, with the difference in bud
placement (easier to say than to photograph) and bark color, which rarely
seems to come out right in photos anyway.
