we have a county extension volunteer group--trained parallel to the master gardeners--that does ecology stuff. i have a longtime friend who is one. he's a docent at florida house--an energy efficient thing [solar batteries, rainwater cisterns, edible and/or native plant landscaping, that sort of stuff] used for public demonstrations and educational programs. i don't know what else they do, i was never interested enough to ask, i guess.
