Margaret- If I thought a seed would grow in it I would.  My lawn was clearly
planted directly into clay (this is part of why it weighs so much!).  I
think there might be a 1/4 in of topsoil- and that is probably from the
topdressing I did of the lawn this fall.  Thanks for the suggestion though.

You're discarding sod?  Theresa, use it instead.  Turn it upside down so
that grass rots.  What you have then is a compact chunk of soil in which to
start seeds, then plant the whole thing.  Margaret L
