And it's a GREAT thought Donna. The area I'm talking about used to be a little dog yard to the west of our house. There is a faucet there...so I'm building raised beds for my herbs and cut flowers. But in the middle I wanted a circle made of shrubs that are fairly tall and a place to sit inside it....and quiet little refuge of sorts. Not really room for trees too...however, planting some on the outside of the fence would not be a bad idea! Thanks.

A wind breaker needs to be rowed to be effective, well at least here. How much room do you have Jesse? Have you thought about a row of trees with shrubs in front? The shrubs could provide EG and provide interest in a different season than the trees. Bare trees in the winter with snow do also provide some interest.
