Re: Holiday Food

Sounds great, Bonnie. I love chow-chow. The best commercial chow-chow I've found has a black chef on the label saying something like, "I am a cook," although Mrs Campbell's is not too shabby, either.

Great Aunt Leni's Chow Chow
1/2 put green hot peppers
1 gallon of chopped cabbage (I have also used summer squash)
1/2 gallon green tomatoes
1 quart onions
4 tbs mustard seed
1 tbs cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon celery seed
1 teaspoon turmeric
2 lbs sugar
3 quarts vinegar.

Cover the vegetables with vinegar and sugar. Cook until tender. Makes
about 14 pints.

It's kind of like piccalilli made with cabbage and hot peppers and tastes
wonderful. My mother used to "put up" quarts of it every summer.
There's a
wonderful little company in Whitehouse, TN, that makes the best I've ever
had.
